GNTC ‘Ask an Expert’
24th November 2017
As part of a brand new, regular feature, we’ll be asking our followers to submit any questions they might have regarding all aspects of tiling. From the ins-and-outs of fitting, design and techniques, we want to address our followers queries. To submit a question, get in touch via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram using the links at the top of the page. We look forward to seeing what you’ve got to say!
Q. I’ve seen a floor tile pattern you’ve done for a restaurant, can you offer that same design for a home customer?
A. Dependant on the size of the area we can install just about any pattern you desire. Only disadvantage may be if the room is too small to incorporate any borders or intricate designs.
Q. What sort of challenges does a new tiler face when trying to get work?
A. Again dependant on experience and qualifications and having the correct attitude. More often than not most sites require CSCS cards so a tiler will have to take the CSCS test. The other hurdle that will have to overcome will be getting there costings correct, do they just do labour only or supply and fix ?? They will also have to take into account the location of the project. Can they fit within the time frame of the client ?? Do they carry a portfolio to show clients what previous work they have completed.
Q. What’s the best way to protect my tile floor and keep it clean and undamaged?
A. The floor tile you choose will determine how best to try and keep it clean and damage free. A soft and porous floor tile such as terracotta limestone and some slates require more attention. This will include the use of stain stop or recommended sealers and the regular applications of sealers. Harder tiles such as porcelain will require less maintenance due to how solid they are manufactured, this is not to say that some porcelain tiles may require sealing.
Q. How will a tiled floor affect my underfloor heating?
A. A tiled floor won’t affect your underfloor heating provided it has been installed correctly, dependant on the substrate and the type of tile, the heat may take longer to transfer through certain tiles. By using certain insulation boards they can provide thermal insulation which will reduce running cost.
